1. Zombieland
2009 Horror/Comedy (R)
Zombieland is apocalyptic comedy at its finest. It includes a rag tag group of people forced into friendship via their need for survival. It stars Jesse Eisenberg as 'Columbus', a scrawny nervous type who gets attacked by his dorm crush and now is just looking for a way home. He follows a strict set of rules that has helped him make it on his own, until he meets 'Tallahassee', Woody Harrelson's character. Tallahassee is hard on the outside, a merciless zombie killer, and a lover of Twinkies. These two are eventually joined by 'Wichita', Emma Stone, and 'Little Rock', Abigail Breslin, scam artist sisters with trust issues. Zombieland is full of creepy vibes, witty lines, and cool zombies.
2. The Mist
2007 Horror/Sci-fi (R)
We have Stephen King to thank for this film. A thick mysterious fog traps a group of townspeople inside of their local grocery store. The longer they wait, the more tension builds inside the store, and the more they discover what is lurking in the fog. I remember the CGI being better when I first watched, but if you don't allow it to snap you out of the movie, this is an exciting and terrifying story. Let's not forget about the ending. One of the most horrifying and frustrating endings of all time. The Mist also features some of our friends from The Walking Dead like Andrea, Dale, and Carol.
3. The Cabin in the Woods
2011 Horror/Comedy (R)
If you are a horror fan, The Cabin in the Woods should definitely be on your list of favorite horror movies. It is like seven horror movies in one! It is full of monsters and horror movie cliches. Five college students travel to a remote cabin to spend the weekend. Each character depicts a different horror movie stereotype, including Chris Hemsworth being the classic dumb jock. They all play a role and serve a purpose, but the question is, to what end?
4. The Grudge
2004 Horror/Mystery (PG-13)
The Grudge proves what we've all known for awhile now...kids are creepy. Dead kids are even creepier. The Grudge is more than a haunted house, it's a curse. A contagious curse, actually. Sarah Michelle Gellar plays the main character who unknowingly gets involved in a string of mysterious deaths. The closer she comes to the truth, the more danger she puts herself in.
5. Night of the Living Dead
1990 Horror/Thriller (R)
Night of the Living Dead is a remake of the 1968 George Romero original (which is also on Roku). It features a group of strangers who end up in a farmhouse in a rural area at the beginning of the zombie apocalypse. As they try to come together to devise a plan, conflicts arise inside. Outside, a horde of reanimated corpse surround. Should they stay and wait for help, or should they flee not knowing what awaits them?
